Updates and articles featuring La Jolla Meals on Wheels and our seniors

Kiwanis Club of La Jolla

Thanks to the members of the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla for their generosity of time and spirit. They have delivered meals weekly on Thursdays to our clients for many years. We greatly value our community partnership!

All Hallows Students Delivering Meals

La Jolla Meals on Wheels got a helping hand from its youngest volunteers who delivered meals to homebound seniors these past few months.

“Each school year every grade participates in an outreach ministry of its choosing,” said All Hallows Academy fifth-grade teacher Shannon Alford. “This past year, my class delivered meals and smiles to those who are homebound and/or sick through La Jolla Meals On Wheels.”

She added that she grew up accompanying her family who delivered meals and “I have positive memories of the experience. I felt it would be a perfect fit for my class as both a giving and learning experience.”

Accompanied by a parent volunteer once a month, the children joined a 40-year tradition in La Jolla started at All Hallows Parish — to serve neighbors in need.

In the spirit of Christmas, La Jolla Girl Scouts treated our Friendly Visitors clients with Christmas carols during the holidays this year. Thank you, girls! Our clients loved the great entertainment.

Sempra Volunteers Lend Support

La Jolla Meals on Wheels, a non-profit organization serving the nutritional needs of about 80 homebound seniors in La Jolla and University City, received a grant of $2,500 from Sempra Energy Foundation, as part of its Season of Giving Program. Throughout December, approximately 20 Sempra employees assisted regular volunteers of La Jolla Meals On Wheels as they delivered fresh, nutritious meals to the residences of homebound seniors on their delivery routes.

In addition to its senior nutrition program, La Jolla Meals On Wheels offers a Friendly Visitors Program to homebound seniors, wherein clients are matched with compatible volunteer visitors for one- to two-hour weekly get togethers. These visits are a great source of comfort and security to the seniors, and help to build their self-confidence.

Since its founding in 1974, La Jolla Meals On Wheels has served more than 400,000 meals to some 1,500 clients. For more information, contact the agency at (858) 452-0391.
